The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, is a landmark legislation in India that empowers citizens to access information from public authorities. It marks a significant shift towards transparency and accountability in governance, giving every Indian citizen the statutory right to request information held by government departments and public sector undertakings.
Under the RTI Act, you can request any information that a public authority can disclose to Parliament or a state legislature. This includes records, documents, memos, emails, opinions, advice, press releases, circulars, orders, logbooks, contracts, reports, papers, samples, models, data material held in any electronic form, and information relating to any private body which can be accessed by a public authority under any other law.
The Act mandates public authorities to appoint Public Information Officers (PIOs) to process these requests. Information must generally be provided within 30 days. The RTI Act has proven instrumental in uncovering corruption, promoting efficient administration, and fostering greater public participation in democratic processes. Knowing how to use it is a powerful tool for good governance.
