In our increasingly digital world, cybercrime poses a significant threat, evolving rapidly to include everything from online fraud and identity theft to cyberstalking and data breaches. India's primary legislation combating these offenses is the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act), alongside relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The IT Act defines various cyber offenses and prescribes penalties for them. For instance, hacking, data theft, publishing obscene material in electronic form, and identity theft are all covered. Recent amendments have strengthened its provisions, aiming to keep pace with technological advancements and emerging threats.
Protecting yourself online is paramount. This includes using strong, unique passwords, being wary of suspicious emails and links (phishing), securing your Wi-Fi networks, and regularly updating your software. If you fall victim to cybercrime, promptly report it to the cybercrime cell of the police or through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. Knowing the law and practicing cyber hygiene are your best defenses.
